Another supplement

Hi again,

Never guess what I have in store for you? Another campaign. A 'little' less farfetched than the previous one, in fact, could be quite fitting in the Tolkien universe.

PDF - The City

This story is more convincing, but I've tried to emphasise that the city was significant for a small period of time, but that its people were scattered after a number of horrors and refused to explain their travels because of their grievances, so effectively no-one would mention where they came from and therefore future generations would not remember it.

Is it perhaps a touch depressing? Yes.
Does it have to be that way to make the story work? Also yes.
Have I included a couple of new characters? Yes.
Have I also attached a small fan fiction piece with it? Yes.
Is there a map of the layout of the city because I though it would be nice rather than making generic houses and dumping them randomly down on a field? Yes.

I should note I'll be posting a PDF with the profiles of all the heroes in the campaigns, largely they are normal captains but with an extra point of might/will/courage and maybe the equipment type change here and there.

There are still two more campaigns to come, comments and feedback are duly welcome.

Until then

Something from the past...

Hello there!

Bet you weren't expecting a post on here? It has been a while and though I shan't be returning to the world of SBG anytime immediately. However, this is a little different.

More recently I went through some of my old fictional scenarios and rules for campaigns etc... Mostly as I was interested in making rules for scenarios, developing game concepts and to a certain extent developing ideas for campaigns. These campaign plot ideas I'd though up in 2011 or 2012 and developed bit by bit (but given I was early teens at the time, they had as many plot holes as a block of swiss cheese), naturally I'd been meaning at some point to write them up or share with some other people. But...that didn't happen.

So really, I'm sharing some funky ideas for campaigns in Middle-earth I've come up with. Compared to what they were initially they are soooooo much better, some creases have been smoothed out (particularly in the case of the background to the campaigns and some of the special rules).

These scenarios are designed to be played for the primary victory conditions, but points are awarded for achieving secondary victory conditions to encourage hard fought battles and that each objective is important in the grand scheme of things (5pts for primary and 2pts for a secondary). The scores and victories are tabulated at the end to see which player has the most points or most victories if the players are tied (when the players are within two points of each other).

PDF - Journey to Harad

This one is the funky one, Initially I had it as Glorfindel rescuing the elven companies, but that seemed a 'touch' unrealistic. Tbh the idea is a bit farfetched, but the thought of elves fighting a Mumakil was particularly tough to pass up on, although it was hard finding a storyline to fit all the companies on and get them in the right place.

This is perhaps a lot to take in, I do have a few more supplements on the way so brace yourselves! Hope you have enjoyed this small piece. Let me know if you have any comments and such :)

Until then

The making of a weapons stash

Hello again!!

Those eagle-eyed viewers out there, will have noticed an objective marker that featured in the last battle I played and it was used it to represent a weapons stash.

It consists of two spear barrels, a crate, some shields and other weapons strewn across the floor, with the idea to use it as a point where a friendly soldier could exchange their weapons or armour provided they were close enough to it.

The main parts that you would need to construct this weapon stash are:

Crate (Made as shown in LOTR battle games in Middle Earth pack 13)
Barrels x 2 (Made as shown in LOTR battle games in Middle Earth pack 13 and 27)
Plastic weapons objective (Taken from the ruins of middle earth sprue)
60mm base
Sand
Dark brown and Black spray paints
Other GW paint colours as mentioned below

Barrel constrcution

The process for making crates and barrels is taken from LOTR battle games in Middle Earth pack 13 and detailed below.

1. Cut a piece of dowel into inch/2.5cm long sections.

2. Smooth of the top and bottom edges until suitably rounded with sandpaper.

3. Cut grooves at regular intervals around the circumference of the barrel (I did this using a knife), do not cut the grooves too deep they are only to show where the 'slats' of the barrel join each other.

4. Cut out two thin strips of card (Mine were approx. 3mm x 50mm and 1mm thick) and glue to near the top and the bottom of the barrel to represent iron banding.

5. Glue sectioned cocktail sticks to the top of the barrel, these will be painted and used to represent spears.

Crate construction

1. Crates can be made quite simply by gluing square or rectangular sections of balsa wood together into a cuboid shape, trimming with a knife where required any overhang off.

2. Use a pair of scissors or blunt pencil to score lines, to suggest planks, into the balsa wood.

3. Glue strips of thin card, like before near either end of the crate.

The finished barrels and crate with other items
to make the weapons stash.
After these have been constructed, they are glued to the
60mm base with any other suitable items that will fit.
Glue is applied to the surface and sand poured over.
Once the glue has dried the sand and other items to the
base, it is sprayed with a basecoat of black.
Once the basecoated feature is dry it is then sprayed
with a dark brown.
Although mine is a much lighter shade of brown, the aim is to
reduce the amount of hand painting required.
I also took the opportunity to coat other terrain features in brown.
And basecoat some other figures too.
Once this layer has dried, the piece can then be paint in more specific colours for each individual feature.

Progressive highlighting was used outline the top of the
barrels to show were the inside rim is compared to the
outside edge, notice how the inside remains unpainted/
unhighlighted after a Rhinox hide wash is applied.

Barrel/crate wood and spear shafts - Rhinox Hide wash, Rhinox Hide to Mournfang Brown to Steel Legion Drab:

Drybrushing (2:1:0)(1:1:0).

Highlighting between the wooden slats (1:2:0)(0:1:0)(0:2:1)(0:1:1)(0:1:2)(0:0:1).

Base/ground - Steel Legion Drab to Ushabti Bone, Drybrushing (1:0)(2:1), Light drybrushing (1:1)(0:1)

Grey stones - Dawnstone to White Scar (1:0) coat then progressive highlights at (2:1)(1:1)(1:2)

Shields - Khorne red to Evil Sunz Scarlet and Dark angels green to Warpstone Glow (1:0)(1:1)(0:1)

Shield bosses - Two coats of Gehenna's gold

Iron banding and spear/axe heads - Highlights of Dawnstone then of Iron breaker.

Thus painting the features like so makes the entire thing look like:

This has turned out much better than I had anticipated. The brown spray was much lighter than I had expected so most of the browns had to be washed darker initially before, and the iron banding colour choices were a bit of a compromise from not having enough metallic colours and thinking it might look good?

Also I've chosen not to flock it as it looks good enough anyway. But overall I happy with the result :) .

200th Post Special : Lego Star Wars A-Wing Review

So last time my posts got up to the 100 mark I was mid-way through the siege of Gondor campaign and the orcs were attacking Minas Tirith.

This time around I wanted to do something different. It's been bugging me that I only have one post related to Lego...(atrocious right?) Also I need an X-wing in my life. But seeing as they cost at the upwards of £80, assuming you know somewhere good to buy it from, this is not such a plausible idea :(

The next best option was, of course, the A-wing (Feel free to disagree). So I went online, and bought myself an A-wing from Bricklink which came out to around £35 with postage. And so this post will be review of the product.

This version of the product is the 75003, released in 2013, typical prices are from £35 to £70, however there are other editions available, such as:
  • 7134(released 2000) (TP £40-50)
  • 6207(released 2006) (fighter doubles up as a pod-racer) (TP £30-60)
  • 75150 which is technically the latest edition (released 2016), This neglects the typical red colour scheme and includes Darth Vaders Tie-fighter so is much more expensive (TP £60-120)

What you get: Parts for Lego A-wing Fighter, three minifigures (A-wing pilot, Han Solo, Admiral Ackbar), stickers, instruction manual.

Assembly:
The instructions included are fairly straight forward, although sometimes tedious with each double page only including details of one or two brick additions, but such occurrences are rare and otherwise it does not get overly complicated nor simple otherwise.

This part of the instructions was in particular tedious, and could
have been done more efficiently.
It is worth noting that this kit is for 7-12 yo's so the more page-consuming parts of the assembly may actually be benefit a 7-12 yo in construction - but it's been a while since I was a 7-12 yo so I can't make any accurate conclusions here.

Less tedious instructions
Interestingly this item includes stickers for some of the bricks, which I feel adds a certain depth to the fighter. In terms of the minifigures, it was nice to see that the A-wing pilot had two interchangeable faces, one scared and the other serious (shown below).

Otherwise the parts included were designed very efficiently and fitted together quite snugly.

Here is the completed kit:

Problems:
Choices of Minifigures - Why exactly is Han solo included? Admiral Ackbar is maybe a justifiable inclusion, but Han solo?

Spare parts - This seems a little pedantic...but, I received 14 1x1 round plates (6 are spares), all from the three different parts of the construction kit when only 8 were actually part of the construction, personally 2 or 3 of these would have been sufficient.

Coffee machine/Water dispenser? - I'm not entirely sure if this is a coffee machine or a water dispenser or anything else, also the glowing green part of the stand doesn't help clarify things apart from suggest that it might be nuclear powered??? Otherwise it would seem so given that admiral Ackbar has a cup. But clarity is not really present here!

Blasters/cannons - The design of the missiles/blasters was relatively simplistic, yes they look like missiles, the attachment of they is okay to use but...there really isn't anything else to them. This isn't so much of an issue except that LEGO, I was expecting something a little less shoddy.

Improvements:
Choice of Minifigures - It perhaps might have been better to include a droid eg. one similar to C3-PO or R2-D2 and a small architecture (apart from a coffee machine/water dispenser?) that represents an A-wing docking station (for refueling or repairs?) instead of Han Solo and Admiral Ackbar.

Stickers - Yes they're great, but maybe this was a chance for 'customers' (For lack of a better word) to add some personal characteristics to the kit?
For example: numbers? different colour strips for the cockpit? Scratch marks/other battle damage?

Ranting over.

Ratings:
Creativity in design - 4.5
Quality of parts - 4
Value for money - 4 (at £35)
Problems - Minor

Overall 4.33/5

These ratings don't really don't show how good a kit this is, bearing in mind a perfect kit is 5/5, this falls slightly short of the mark. This isn't because it did anything major wrong in specific, just some of the little things were left out and it didn't do enough else right.

But otherwise, this kit has done itself justice, and worth a buy!

Battle company tourney Forces and Rules

Battle company tourney

Forces
All of the companies are taken roughly as-received from the original rules, a couple have been modified so that the sides fall within the 33% archers regulation.

All companies will elect a leader, that is promoted to hero status and gains +1 might, will and fate.

- Rohan company: Lead by Eogar

- Isengard company: Lead by Gazlur

- Harad company: Lead by Adaan

- Gondor company: Lead by Ingold

- Moria company: Lead by Radmuz

Rules
Standard battle companies rules apply, with exception that:

- Any company may not play rescue missions for injured hero members that roll a 3 on the injury chart, they are considered dead (as if they had rolled a 2).
- No company may have more members than their starting amount, therefore members of the existing party must be killed or retired before new members can be acquired.
- Members that would otherwise miss the next turn due to their injuries simply miss the next battle.
-To clarify for this tournament: Companies receive 2 influence per battle they are involved in, they gain 1 influence if the result of the battle result is a draw, 2 for a minor victory and 3 for a major victory.
- Influence may be used to purchase equipment for members of the battle company or to modify rolls made on hero/warrior injury and warrior promotion tables (1 influence is equivalent to a single re-roll).
- Alternatively, a company may use a single influence point per battle to re-roll one of their own priority rolls.

Specials
ArmourBane - If a company's leader deals the killing blow to the enemy leader then their killing weapon gains +1 on the to-wound roll (This is cumulative with weapons that already have bonuses, eg. two-handed weapons and lances).

Marksmanship - If a ranged company member kills/injures an opponent with their first shot of the battle, this member automatically and permanently gains a ranged fight value of 2+.

Total domination - If a company completely kills/injures all enemy participants, or captures all objectives in a battle, then they may acquire a banner (which can be carried by a friendly warrior) for use in all subsequent battles.

How to win?
The victor of each battle will be decided by the battles objectives (as per LOME rules). Each company will be given points for each of the following:
- Breaking an enemy force (3)
- Killing an enemy leader outright (2)
- Achieving major victory conditions (3)
Achieving minor victory conditions (2)
Achieving draw conditions (1)
- Achieving victory conditions in the final battle (4)

After each company has fought all other companies they will face each other in the final big battle. A battle company may gain the advantages for this final battle by achieving the following:
  • Remain undefeated as a company - All members gain +1 courage and +1 fight values (even though this may take them above their maximum allowed values).
  • Have no injured party members after the company's final round of fighting - This company gains a weapons stash objective for use in the final battle. It may be deployed along with the rest of the battle company in this battle, provided there is enough room to do so. If multiple companies achieve this, then control of the weapons stash is given to whichever company has more models within 6''/14cm of the objective.
A member of the company that controls the weapon stash may wield any of the following items of wargear provided they are within 3''/8cm of the objective
- Shield
- Heavy armour
- Spear
- Pike
- Lance (must be on horseback to use this)
- Bow, crossbow or throwing weapons (provided the company member has a ranged fight characteristic that is not - )
- Two handed weapons eg. axes
Heroes and warriors using the objective in this manner must declare what items are being used by whom at the end phase of the turn, such that they can be used in the next turn.

After the final battle, the companies will be ranked in terms of the most points obtained, the company with the highest is the winner. However if two sides still are level, then the company with the highest accrued experience of all the hero members (dead or alive) will take precedence.

Battle order:

Round 1 - Harad vs Rohan (Reconnoitre) , Moria vs Isengard (Domination)

Round 2 - Gondor vs Harad (To The Death!) , Rohan vs Moria (Ill Met by Moonlight)

Round 3 - Rohan vs Isengard (Storm the Camp) , Gondor vs Moria (Reconnoitre)

Round 4 - Moria vs Harad (To Kill a King) , Isengard vs Gondor (Storm the Camp)

Round 5 - Gondor vs Rohan (Meeting Engagement) , Isengard vs Harad (Contest of Champions)

Final battle (To be revealed)(All companies)

Hopefully this sets the scene for the battles to come and something to look forward to.

Summer plan: Enter stage right

After a year i'm glad to put behind me, it's back to SBG!

Like most other summers I plan to do a lot, and get around to about 40-60% of it.
But this time my objectives are far more realistic......I hope.

So I'm thinking of painting some orcs warriors, morannon orc warriors, maybe a couple of heroes, do some basing, fight through a another set of battles and maybe fixing a bunch of models, and perhaps something else.

Anyways, one of those things is a tournament, which I'm currently planning. I've got five companies all from various regions. The plan is for each side to fight each other once, with warriors and heroes being upgraded in the process, and maybe they'll be some special wargear/ items/ rules for heroes and other members to use, with it ending in one big fight between all five companies!

At some point I'll put up the special rules and how the winner will be decided.

Easter Etiquette

Hello again!

The last post from me came just before Christmas, and then unfortunately the impending coursework and exams got in the way of posting up more rounds of the face-off :(

...well that and also the fact that the last rounds mysteriously disappeared from my hard-drive :@

However the games do continue, and hopefully the face-off will be finished this Easter and I can continue with more interesting warhammer-y bits and bobs :)

Tis the season to be jolly!

Hello again!

So recently the activity on here has hit a new low. This is not only because of life at university presenting the continued existence of exams and of coursework to keep me occupied - But wait, what about the summer, surely you got time off there?

Well... not really.
I decided to embark in a journey that consisted of me trying and actually getting some form of summer job (to keep the parents off my case!)

That's all well and great, however my time spent on doing the war-gaming things I enjoy, not so great :(
Now I have time free! And with this free time I'll talk about the gaming I've planned for over the Christmas break.

In keeping with my own personal tradition, there will be a mini face-off during this time, although this isn't my favourite form of gaming in LOTR, it's a simple thing both to plan for and to follow. Which helps as I don't always have the freedom over Christmas to carry out extensive campaigns, huge battles, painting sessions and modelling terrain; which everyone would much prefer.

The difference this time around is that I've modified the setup a little: there's now a play off between three forces, two so through to the knockout stages, the rest is very similar:

The fiefdoms re-enter the competition after they won the 2013 competition, Moria also enter again alongside Erebor and Rivendell in the play-off stages. Tower of Ecthelion are absent as they won in 2014 (although the final was actually in 2015).

Another thing is that this is a face-off 2016, as by the time I get around to posting most of the battles (like last year) it will no longer be 2015. Kinda like last time when most of the posts for the face-off 2014 were in January 2015 *insert slapface*.

The warriors and heroes composing each force will be included in the next post, along with the scenarios of each encounter between the forces.

A little surprise

Over the last break I covered a couple of scenarios involving the fellowship in Moria and their escape...

Between then an now, I have happened across some more characters in the Lord of the rings universe.

I wanted a powerful evil character, as they have no proper threats from my current collection, with exception to maybe Gothmog, a cave troll, a weakened version of the Witch-king or the Mumakil, all three can be neturalised by the forces of good.

So I bought Gulavhar, the terror of Arnor:

He needs the glueing of a horn and repainting...

I also forgot to get a foot version of Suladan the Serpent Lord before. So:

And finally, to balance the evil filling my collection Radagast the brown is a support for Gandalf.

Personally my favourite version of him
During the remaining couple of weeks left of a long summer. I plan to play through the six scenarios in the Siege of Gondor sourcebook.

Which covers the attack on Osgiliath the year before the start of the war of the ring, up to the events at the Pyre of Denethor.

Making amends

Recently when I took a break while waiting for the battery in my camera to recharge, upon looking through the GW website, I noticed quite a few of the blister packs had been discontinued.
Thus an hour followed of me hurriedly scrolling through eBay desperate to find a few items that I might have put off buying before...
So with much deliberation and signing in to Paypal and GW. I managed to purchase a few Items as shown below:

Some assembly is required...
The axemen of Lossarnach complete my fiefdoms army, Elrohir goes towards my 750pt competitive army, the bases are for my spare legionary soldiers (I will complete them!) and the royal guard completes my collection of a basic bodyguard for a Rohan hero.

Also I had to, with much reluctance, buy new GW paints... Although citadel paints are water based/acrylic (as I have been told) and spent a session desperately trying to mix water with my aged paints, to revive them. The results yielded a fairly sad conclusion...
It was time for some new ones, which meant either high prices of eBay or the shame of GW paints:

So hopefully I can finish some of the unpainted models in my collection :) .

My Easter Jaunt

I'm back again, this time with plenty to do...

Coursework and revision will take a minor role over my personal life, but it shan't stop anything in this case.

In the following few weeks I (hopefully) shall cover:
  • Spraying more of the boards
  • A troll painting session
  • Some undercoating and repainting, to a minor extent
  • A handful of Fellowship Of The Ring battles, either from the mines of Moria booklet or fellowship book
  • And if there is enough time, some Fellowship Of The Ring heroes repainting...
So a clear Fellowship Of The Ring theme going on
Probably since over the break I bought:

Costed much less than for GW, only £19 for both. The first one does require some glueing, and the other a wash/undercoat, despite the fact that the paint-job is pretty decent. And also these:

54 is next :)

Although they are on my list to collect the entire set, the completion time should be after the next year or so...

Coming home

Well I've been away for too long, not long enough though.
As the stats show that November gathered 2100 views, a record amount considering no posts were made...

So if you viewed here intentionally or by accident, I thank you!

Regarding Gondor in Flames,  I must personally apologise for the late posting of the fifteenth turn end, I managed to leave a single picture on my home computer * slapface *.
I'm also afraid That's all folks, there is not enough time over the Xmas Hol's to complete five turns, but in fact if I did continue I would finish after Easter break and give you audience a very unstructured end to Gondor in Flames.
Which you probably wouldn't prefer.

So concluding Gondor in flames, I will put up a list of the key participants with their profiles and even my nominations plus my awards under various categories (I just thought this up) as follows:

Best performance
- Lieutenant
- Corporal
- Hero

Most shocking
- Kill
- Dice roll
- moment

Best battle

Can't think of any more, hope this will suffice?

On another note, my next few posts with contain the second face-off tournament.

This time it features:

The Fiefdoms
Theoden's host
Cirth Ungol
Dwarves of Erebor
The Easterlings
Isengard raiders
Rivendell
Moria

Next time I do one of these, I'll do a group stage, What do you think?

Wooden Palisade 2

Last time I made straight sections of palisade, well the magazine contains more than that.
So to come are:
  • Corner sections
  • The gate-section
Meaning a square fort can be fully assembled.

Corners

Cut out a circle from a piece of card using a pair-of-compasses and a knife, the radius should have be the same as the width of a wall section 2''/5cm.

Cut the circle into four sections.

Cut out a piece of polystyrene 1''/2.5cm wide and tall, and leaves the same gap between the corner and the start of the polystyrene, then glue to card base.

Cut out spikes 2''/5cm tall and shorter ones at 1.5''/3cm tall (same as was done for the wall sections) and glue to polystyrene and base.

Glue down a triangle of card then scored balsa wood in the corner, or two layers of matchsticks.

Press and glue halved cocktail sticks into the polystyrene.

Gateway

Cut out a 12''/30cm by 2''/5cm of card as a base

Cut out two pieces of polystyrene, 1''/2cm by 1''/2cm by 1.5''/3.5cm , and trim them in half to create the effect of angular packed earth.

Glue to either side of the base.

Glue 2''/5cm spiked skewers and 1.25''/3cm flat-ended skewers behind the polystyrene

The door

Cut out a piece of thin card 1.75''/4.5cm by 1.75''/4.5cm. Then into halves.

Cut out spiked skewers approximately 2.5''/6cm long and glue to front of the card

Cut out four square balsa wood posts 2.75''/7cm tall and 0.5''/1cm wide (two for each side)

Cut out four pieces of paper 1.5''/4cm by 0.5cm. Glue to top and bottom of each door to make hinges.

Glue 1.75''/4.5cm flat-ended skewers to the back of the cards.
Glue the posts onto the ends of the paper hinges.
Remember not to cover all of the paper else the door won't open.
Leave a gap between the bottom of the door and the bottom of the posts.

Trim the polystyrene if needed so both posts and the doors will fit.

Glue down card then scored balsa wood (or matchsticks) for floorboards around the spiked fence-and through the gap.
Then glue in the posts. If they don't stand sturdily glue skewers across the top to attach both posts.

The completed fort:

I think that my one turned out pretty well, at least better than I imagined.
Although the floorboards only support 80% of an inch base, so next time I would increase the width of the base.
Also I would round off the polystyrene to create a more realistic effect.

Anyway I hoped you learnt something there. It still needs to be undercoated and painted, like before, I'll wing it :)

Until then
