More recently I've been focusing on Gondor in flames, here's a break from the action:
As shown in Battle games in middle-earth 27.
In case you don't have an issue here's the rough process:
Cut out a piece of card 12"/30cm by 2"/5cm, although I've used 2"/5cm by 6"/14cm as my sheet of card wasn't big enough
Cut out a 1"/2cm by 1"/2cm by 12"/30cm section of polystyrene (triangular prism)
Glue to the front of the card base
At this point the magazine made the fire-step, but I had already continued with the fence spikes at this point :S
Cut barbecue skewers into 5cm and 3cm lengths and glue against the earthworks
Cut out a piece of foam board 1"/2cm by 12"/30cm and glue behind the wooden spikes, then glue a thin scored sheet of balsa wood of similar size above it to look like boarding.
My fire-step was made of lots of matchsticks
Glue halved cocktail sticks to the front of the earthworks, around 2 per inch of palisade.
Giving a total of 36 inches of fortified ground. I'm quite pleased with the result, although I was surprised that not many other attempts are shown at all on the blog-o-sphere.
If you know of a website or blog that has done something similar, I'd be pleased to look at it.
Now all that's left is to paint this piece, the magazine doesn't suggest a paint scheme so I'll just wing it :)
Until then

Gondor in Flames turn 10 end
Lieutenants Aerun and Luthyre win the first toe-to-toe battle, at the crossroads, without fleeing.
Lieutenant Anersk is pushed back by Nethar after the assault on north Druadan.
The goblin captain pushes the Gondorian forces from Osgiliath, for the first time.
And Lieutenant Mainz secures his fourth victory over a rogue warband.
Lieutenant Vashner had to retreat north of Osgiliath, and Morge south-east near to the Ithilien forest.
Similarly Lieutenant Anersk retreats south-east towards Cair Andros.
Lieutenant Oira also retreats west to Minas Tirith
Both sides are vulnerable at this point, Minas Tirith can be attacked from Osgiliath by the Goblins.
Cair Andros also, given that there are two companies and the riders of Rohan against the poor Anersk, moreover Cirth Ungol is left almost undefended.
Giving Gondor a supreme total of 4068R, and Mordor a smaller total of 1403R.
Right now Gondor is weakened, Osgiliath has been lost and it will be very difficult to retake it, since there is a troll and a considerable force of goblins behind the walls. Even through there a series of defeats, a shot at taking Minas Tirith is considerable.
Anersk has some back-tracking to do so he can ably defend Cair Andros and the position it provides.
Morge and Vashner are in similar positions as they have to find some defend-able walls to regather their strength.
Rathin at north Harnen has spent turns preparing for Mainz' arrival, by not purchasing a single peasant or recruit.
Nethar and Haldran are in lazy mode chasing down Anersk and trying to secure Cair Andros, which could be done, but first they must consider cornering him to deliver the fatal blow.
Mainz finally approaches north Harnen, they face greater numbers, with only skill as an advantage.
Luthyre, Dengond and Aerun must some how retake Osgiliath, Cirth Ungol against three numerically superior units, again with only skill on their side.
Oira has the greatest challenge to backtrack to Minas Tirith or prevent the goblins from leaving Osgiliath.

Second battle of Osgiliath
Siege roll: 3
Scenario roll: 10
Raging river/take the watchtower are not very applicable in this situation, so I re-rolled,
Scenario roll 2 : 4
The goblin captain ordered the goblins and troll over the hill, the ruins of Osgiliath in sight.
Oira (+ Peasants) Vs Goblin horde (Control)
Deployment:
The goblins control all three contested areas meaning 3-0
Giving the Goblins their first victory! (+400R for the victory+400R for capturing an enemy stronghold) = +800R
The goblins take possession of the peasants. Two recover from their wounds, another must miss the next turn. There is a similar story with the goblin casualties, only an archer is detained.
In the dwarven camp Oira and two other warriors recover, another is detained. Oira managed to steal an amulet whilst they made their escape, which they sold to rogues for 50R.
The goblin captain smiled, as he had not done in many months. All orc Lieutenants would look upon him with jealousy, he had gained the first victory for the dark lord and Osgiliath too. He had to be wary. Luthyre, Dengond and Aerun would not let it remain so, not for long at least...
Oira bade the rogues farewell, for he must wait until he had orders to dispatch them. The steward would not be pleased with this, the high morale among the Gondorians is broken and it was his fault. The dwarves beside him tried to persuade him otherwise, yet his mind was unchanged.
A rider came during the night, he bore news and the orders from the steward. It was not good...

Scenario roll 2 : 4
The goblin captain ordered the goblins and troll over the hill, the ruins of Osgiliath in sight.
From a distance only a couple of specks were atop the wall. Clearly his plan had worked, Dengond and Aerun would struggle to break through the orc lines and now Osgiliath had less than half a dozen men to defend it. His scouts had reported differently, noting a small force approaching the city from the west. He had neglected this as important, but had tried to hasten the siege to prevent this 'force' from any un-noted advantages.
"Faster Maggots!" He bellowed, and the maggots followed orders.
Deployment:
Peasants lie down to avoid bow-fire |
.......... |
However the ladders evade them when they rise again |
Peasants cast them down |
Pushed up |
Cast down again |
The troll manages to remove a batter point from the gate |
The goblins manage to ascend the ladders |
Both lose fights, one is killed |
More climbing and fighting |
Another batter point removed, leaving it in splinters |
Like so |
The goblin captain calls a heroic move, allowing the troll into the gatehouse |
.......... |
Oira's forces arrive |
......... |
Oira's dwarves cannot attack or shoot in the turn after they arrive |
Finally a foothold at the walls |
The troll wounds a peasant, and a peasant wounds the captain, only to be saved by fate |
the dwarves surround the troll hoping for the best |
The battlefield pretty much empty at this point |
Despite 10 dice rolled, not a singe wound, even with +1's |
Trying to claim the upper gatehouse |
Fights inside the battlements |
The troll downs two dwarves, the goblin captain is wounded again, and Oira squishes a goblin |
The only contested ladder is pushed down |
The dwarves and peasants trying to contain the troll and captain |
Another goblin wounded |
The three goblins move towards the gate |
Much fighting inside the walls |
Oira flattened by the troll |
A dwarf archer wounded too, leaving the good force broken. A six is rolled allowing the game to continue |
Evil taking advantage of priority |
Entering the city |
Another peasant injured |
And the game ends! |
The goblins have more models on and beneath the gatehouse, on the battlefield, and inside the city |
